SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT SPECIALIST/PLANNER
Summit Environmental Consultants Inc. is searching for a senior environmental professional to play a leadership role in our environmental impact assessment (EIA) and planning practice. Summit works on the "one office" model, so the successful applicant could work in Vernon BC, Calgary AB, or Burnaby BC. Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in an environmental discipline (e.g. biology/ecology, physical geography, geoscience, or chemistry) supplemented by a graduate degree in environmental assessment, planning, or natural resource management and/or significant practical experience in EIA (i.e. 7-10+ years). The successful candidate will be very experienced with the full range of environmental assessment regulatory processes in Western Canada, from screening assessments of small-scale projects up to major projects subject to review by CEAA, the National Energy Board, provincial environmental assessment offices, or other agencies. In addition to project work, the successful candidate will manage projects, build and coordinate EIA teams, develop new business, and maintain client relationships.

HYDROGEOLOGISTS - VERNON AND METRO VANCOUVER, BC
Summit Environmental Consultants Inc. is searching for hydrogeologists at all levels (1-10 years experience) to fill positions in Okanagan and Metro Vancouver (Burnaby) office locations. The successful candidates will work with a dynamic team on a variety of assignments relating to water supply, wastewater and stormwater management, solid waste (e.g. landfills), water resources management, and contaminated sites assessment. Projects include groundwater supply well development, well pumping tests, groundwater modeling, groundwater management and protection, surface water-groundwater interaction studies, and groundwater monitoring. Successful candidates can expect to be involved in both site-specific and regional-scale hydrogeologic investigations.

The successful candidates will have:

  • Thorough knowledge of physical hydrogeology as applied to groundwater supply, stormwater management, wastewater disposal, groundwater-surface water interaction, and groundwater protection;
  • Additional experience in contaminated sites, mining and energy sectors, and landfills is desired;
  • Intermediate to Senior applicants must also possess the ability to manage projects from proposal to final report, with guidance as needed from senior professionals;
  • B.Sc. in earth science with hydrogeology emphasis; M.Sc. preferred;
  • Full command of English, both written and oral; and
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer or Geoscientist with APEGBC; or verified eligibility for same upon application. GIT/EIT status or eligibility required for junior applicants.

SOIL SCIENTIST - BC or ALBERTA
We are seeking a soil scientist to work on projects in a variety of client sectors, including mining, waste management, oil and gas, agriculture, forestry, transportation, and land development. Candidates should have a degree in soil science and be registered as a P.Ag. in either BC or Alberta (with the ability to be cross-registered), and have training in soil fertility. They should also have experience in developing plans for the beneficial use of residuals, including bio-solids, finished compost, treated wastewater, and other organics. Other potential areas of practice include reclamation of disturbed land, soil and water conservation, land capability assessment, and assessment of cropping options. Experience or aptitude in business development is required. Applicants could work in Vernon BC, Calgary AB, or Burnaby BC.

SENIOR & INTERMEDIATE BIOLOGISTS - BC AND ALBERTA
Summit Environmental Consultants Inc. is seeking senior and intermediate-level aquatic and terrestrial biologists to join our team of professionals in Vernon, Metro Vancouver, or Calgary. The successful candidate will have an active role in project management and business development and will be working within a team to design and prepare environmental assessments and plans. The position will involve both field and office work. Our integrated team of professionals provides an atmosphere that encourages ongoing development of technical, leadership and business skills. The positions require experience in a consulting setting and registration (or eligibility for registration) in the relevant provincial professional organization. Strong communication and report writing skills are required. Familiarity with municipal, provincial and federal environmental regulations is an asset.

SENIOR CONTAMINATED SITES PROFESSIONAL - ALBERTA or BC
We are recruiting for a senior contaminated sites professional to play a leadership role in our contaminated sites practice, and to be based in Calgary, (or Vernon if preferred with travel to Alberta). The successful individual will be a key member of a growing practice in contaminated site assessment and remediation, serving clients in Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan, Northern Territories, and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The successful candidate will be very experienced with the full range of contaminated sites (CS) regulatory processes in Western and Northern Canada, from Phase 1 ESAs up to major remediation projects. In addition to project work, the successful candidate will manage projects, build and coordinate CS teams, develop new business, and maintain client relationships. Minimum qualifications are an undergraduate or graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g. hydrogeology, soil science, or toxicology), professional registration, at least ten years of related work experience and eight years of direct contaminated sites experience. A successful record of leadership and project management is essential. Membership (or eligibility for membership) in the B.C. Society of Contaminated Sites Approved Professionals is required. Excellent spoken and written communication skills are also required.

SENIOR AND INTERMEDIATE HYDROLOGISTS – VERNON
Summit Environmental Consultants Inc. is seeking hydrologists at senior and intermediate levels to join our surface water hydrology group in Vernon and/or Metro Vancouver, B.C.

The successful applicant for the Senior Hydrologist position will provide strong scientific leadership on a wide range of assignments in western Canada, supervise staff, manage relationships with existing clients, and develop business with new clients. Minimum qualifications are:

  • Graduate degree in a relevant discipline and at least five years of progressive work experience. While the scientific focus is hydrology, the position requires knowledge and experience in other aspects of water resources and environmental geoscience;
  • Membership or eligibility for membership in APEGBC;
  • Excellent computer and communication skills;
  • Scientific skills in a range of areas including hydrometric data collection and analysis, water supply and demand analysis, water balance analysis, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, land-use hydrology, and fluvial geomorphology; and
  • Experience in preparing proposals, developing and nurturing client relationships, and supervising staff.

Candidates for the Intermediate Hydrologist positions should have a B.Sc./B.A.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in a relevant field, and several years of experience in hydrology. Experience installing and operating hydrometric, climate, and water quality stations; and strong analytical, modeling and writing skills are essential. Membership or eligibility for membership in APEGBC is an asset at this level.

DATA SYSTEMS DEVELOPER – VERNON
Summit Environmental Consultants Inc. is seeking an experienced Data Systems Developer to work within Summit’s growing practice in database design, database management, environmental modeling, and geomatics. The position will include the design and management of data systems containing biological, chemical, hydrologic, geographical, and administrative data for clients in both the private and public sectors. The successful candidate will work closely with Summit's environmental science and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialists. The successful candidate will also have a role in business development, to further expand Summit's practice in information management. Typical project work would include: working with clients to define their data management needs; recommending system solutions to the clients; system implementation; and training clients to integrate and use the system solution. In addition to the above, the position would also include providing data management support (e.g., query writing, report automation and training) with existing data management systems.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Expertise with designing and managing databases. Skills with custom programming and scripting are required;
  • Experience working with databases containing environmental data;
  • Interest in business development;
  • Desire to join a multi-disciplinary team working on projects related to environmental science, land use, and water resource management;
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills; and
  • B.Sc. in Computer Science or equivalent.

We usually hire several contract technical staff for the mid-July to October period to support our full-time staff. For contract fisheries positions applicants should have valid electrofishing certification. All contract positions involve fieldwork and thus require good physical fitness and WCB Level 1 first aid.
