Summit has completed several components of a comprehensive, multi-year program aimed at recovery of the Okanagan sockeye salmon stock, which spawns in the Okanagan River between Vaseux and Osoyoos Lakes and rears in Osoyoos Lake. Major project components completed by Summit have included spawner enumeration, spawning habitat mapping, modelling of potential redd scour and desiccation, freeze coring of sockeye redds, reconstruction of the natural hydrograph over the period of record, riparian vegetation assessment and mapping, and modelling of basin hydrology as it relates to predicting the socio-economic and environmental impacts of water management decisions. Most of the project components have been completed under contract to the Okanagan Nation Fisheries Commission, with funding provided by Public Utility District #1 of Douglas County, Washington.
